Introduction to Phulkari with Rafia Shafiq at Capsul Studio Thursday, January 23, 2025
In this hands-on session, attendees were introduced to Phulkari, the traditional Punjabi embroidery art form known for its vibrant colors and intricate designs. Led by Rafia Shafiq at Capsul Studio, participants explored the historical and cultural significance of Phulkari while learning foundational stitches and techniques to create traditional patterns. Rafia guided attendees as they selected their own designs and color palettes, culminating in a beautifully embroidered hoop to take home.
Rafia Shafiq is an Oakville-based artist dedicated to preserving and promoting the intricate art of Phulkari embroidery. Through her business, Dhaga Art, she has brought this cherished craft to life in Canada. Rafia collaborates with museums, colleges, universities, textile studios, and art galleries across the Greater Toronto Area, conducting workshops that celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Phulkari embroidery. Known for her custom embroidered creations, she has earned a reputation in the North American market for her one-of-a-kind designs and commitment to reviving this traditional art form.
